Professional Intervention Program for Adversity (PIPA)

PIPA is an innovative program that enables mental health professionals to provide individual or group care in situations of adversity. PIPA Professionals are able to identify traumatic stress and provide appropriate interventions in groups settings so that participants can heal past or recent adverse experiences.

The goal of this Program is to train a greater number of professional psychotherapists who can work with groups, expanding the outreach of traumatic stress relief and minimizing the impact of trauma on affected communities and their society. Any licensed mental health practitioner may be trained in this Program although EMDR therapists will be more familiar with some aspects of the exercises in this program.

This program is a trauma intervention program that brings basic introductory trauma information (Modules 1-5), three practical exercises for group (or individual) intervention for old or recent adverse experiences, plus two hours of consultation to give participants initial guidance and mentoring for the implementation of the program.

This program is composed of three main parts:

Part 1: Modules 1-5 (recorded, on-demand classes) provide an initial theoretical introduction to trauma, teach stabilization exercises (Pillars of Life), and emphasize the importance of referrals. The recorded videos offer the basic information that PIPA Professionals should be familiar with in order to answer questions from their group participants. These videos can be watched at your convenience. There is a quiz at the end of each module, which requires a 70% passing rate in order to proceed to the next module.

Part 2: In Module 6 (5 hours live) practical exercises are taught, which are necessary for the complete implementation of the Program with others in the future. Participants must attend the live training to ensure a better understanding and to develop skills and confidence. Each participant will have the opportunity to experience the personal impact of the exercises and to practice leading the exercises with their colleagues in small groups.

Part 3: Two hours of live consultation must be completed with a certified PIPA Consultant or Trainer in order to receive the full Certificate of Completion for the PIPA Program.

Future (optional) ongoing mentoring and guidance will be offered in group settings for those who wish to further enhance their proficiency in the PIPA Program.

Part of the funds from this course help support the work of the TraumaClinic Network of Solidarity, enabling us to provide free or low-cost PIPA training to others.
